Instructions For a Bad Day : Inspiring spoken word poem

This poem by Shane Koyczan is inspiring . Watch the video or read the poem below and get uplifted. You know there is definitely hope no matter what! "There will be bad days. Be calm. Loosen your grip, opening each palm slowly now. Let go. Be confident. Know that now is only a moment, and that if today is as bad as it gets, understand that by tomorrow, today will have ended. Be gracious. Accept each extended hand offered, to pull you back from the somewhere you cannot escape. Be diligent. Scrape the gray sky clean. Realize every dark cloud is a smoke screen meant to blind us from the truth, and the truth is whether we see them or not - the sun and moon are still there and always there is light. Be forthright. Despite your instinct to say "it's alright, I'm okay" - be honest. Say how you feel without fear or guilt, without remorse or complexity. Be lucid in your explanation, be sterling in your oppose. If you think for one second no one knows what you...

An Year Older But Is There anything to Celebrate?

Thank you Lord for all you have been to me. Having a birthday is nostalgic! Happy one minute, angry the other and scared. I experienced all that on my birthday, don't know whether any one else does. So now that am an year older, do I have anything to celebrate? I wish our dates of birth were irrelevant. Like I didn't know what year I was born. At least I wouldn't be fretting on what I have achieved or not achieved so far, I wouldn't be pondering on how many kids to have and so many other things. In fact, the future would not seem so scary! I would be busy enjoying and not worrying. I wouldn't know am growing old till the first streaks of grey hair start showing. And even then, it wouldn't matter because "hell it's just one hair and Petronilla my friend has half her head white!" I m scared of old age! Don't know anyone who isn't? That day when your kids start taking complete care of you because, you have no idea what is happening a...

Life is What You Make It

I saw this quote from Marilyn Monroe and thought it best to share. If as ladies such advice is given to us by our mothers when we are still young, it would go a long way. So read on so that you can give it to your daughters in the future when that time comes. “This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find t...

Respect Is A Two Way Traffic Thingy

Image source: http://makeameme.org Do we always have to be rude to touts? I know a while ago I had problems with them refusing to refund change in the piece the annoying matatu neighbor, but seriously we have to cut this guys some slack. Most of them may not be the most respectful human beings, but we can't judge all of them by the same script. Ask for change respectfully and the guy or chick will be respectful. Ask rudely and you taste the pepper. It's as though some of us have a certain perception about these guys that we no longer treat them as equals.  Traveling from Embakassi to town with me was this chick. Lets call her Susan. We get to the jam near railways and the tout announces that anyone who wants to alight the bus should do so then because the next stop will be at the stage. Several people alight and the tout closes the door. The bus moves twenty minutes forward, and Susan decides she has to alight. Note: "has to!" Conductor: "s...

Men + Emotions. Is it a NO! NO?

Do men have emotions or do they just have a great way of hiding it? Women have been known to openly show their emotions since time immemorial. They just find it hard to hide it. I for example am an open book! Can’t hide when am angry or extremely happy. But men are a different book altogether.   Sometimes you can barely tell whether they are happy or sad. It’s even hard to decipher what their feeling are sometimes. Unlike everyone else, I believe men have emotions too. They just have different ways of showing or not showing them. When a man is extremely sad, they will cry on the inside.(something to do with the ego or something like that) but a woman will wail so loudly.(The Naija women are experts in this, according to my Afrocinema days). Ever seen the look on a man’s face when he holds his newborn child? (Well, one he has accepted to be his!). The smile on his face is heavenly. They are completely moved to a point they cannot hide it at all. They will not “oh my G...

The Annoying Matatu Neighbour

Have you encountered an annoying ‘Matatu’ neighbor? Have you ever been the annoying one? Ever pissed off someone in the ‘matatu’? Have you been pissed off while travelling?  ‘Matatu’s’ and buses often force us to be neighbors. Friendly or not depends on so many factors. Most of the time the journey ends with no mishaps but this is not always the case. Well there is the noisy loud music and some radio station that is not in a language you understand. There is also a rude tout who definitely has your change in his back pocket but for some reason (you may never understand) holds onto your change. There is a neighbor who keeps staring at you like you are from outer space and especially if you are a lady in a miniskirt. He for some reason is either imagining you without it at all or, she is cursing you for having better legs than her. Another will not quit chewing loudly and when they talk on the phone you get baptized with most of the saliva. Another is still in the 18th century...
