Life is so busy
isn’t it? We always seem to keep chasing after something or someone. We’re
either chasing that work deadline, that promotion, the need to make a quick
buck. Saving up to buy that car, chasing to impress our dream girl or guy. We’re always chasing. Vi:a islamicrays
I don’t think books should be read to meet deadlines. Am of
the opinion that a good book should be enjoyed... it should be savored. In
the end, like Anna Godbersen says, moments savored are the only things that
matter. If meeting deadlines is a reason for you to read a book, then you’ve
lost the whole point of reading. I believe that a book is an escape from all
the realities of life. When in a good mood, when in a sour mood, when in a
‘soso’ mood, when you are idle, when on a bus or train ride and if possible on
a motorbike (someone should try that). Read a book when you have time and when
you don’t have time.
When Ashley your boss wants that report by 12 and its eleven and you really want to find out whether Poppy marries Magnus or she dumps him at the altar. Or whether sam is dump enough to let her get married to him or fight for her because by the powers vested in you, you can tell that the two have something for each other. Don’t worry. Do what every book addict would do if given the opportunity. Pick up your handbag, like you do when visiting the ladies, stuff some old newspaper or magazine in it if its big enough. If not be creative and find a place to hide it. Or don’t hide it, your choice (just make sure when the toilet gets clogged again people are not looking at you like they knew all along you are yet to discover tissue paper). When you get to the toilet, put down the toilet seat cover, place your newspaper or old magazine neatly on it (we don’t want you catching anything down there), have a seat and enjoy reading the last five pages of the book while seated on that toilet seat. If you have the book in kindle version, then lucky you, you don’t have to haul the whole bag into the toilet and wonder where to place it, you just have to be really creative with the newspaper (there are just very few places you could hide a newspaper or magazine without having some parts of your body bulging or emanating some funny sounds). Trust me after you finish those five pages, you will be in a happier mood to finish mean-boss Ashley’s report. It won’t matter if she is mean and self conceited.
I think setting goals is a good idea. Say you want to have finished 3 books by the end of the week, do that but make it flexible. The ink on the books won’t run out if you don’t reach that target, they will just be glad someone enjoyed the words written in them eventually when they did. There is no tangible price to be worn unless it’s one you’ve engineered. The real price is in the enjoyment. The being in pace with the writer and really getting what they wanted to convey. Getting the gratification you wanted and that the book promised to give. Set goals but read the books for the right purpose. To enjoy, to immerse yourself and disappear into that magical world that makes you discover new worlds, new beginnings, hope, love and so much more.
I love what good books make you do; they make you read the hardcover at six in the evening on the bus ride even when the lighting is not too good. The book becomes too good that you think of turning your mulika mwizi on and continue reading. Sometimes you read the eBook late into the night and by the time you’re waking up in the morning, your eyes are so sore from staring at the small screen. I don’t know if you’ve ever been too engrossed in a book only to realize you are two stops past your home. Or you get out of the toilet at home and your kid is like, “mum, are you okay?” and you realize you finished your business 30 minutes ago but didn’t even realize it. That’s what I love about a good book. You disappear into it.
By the way does the deadline mean that I have to finish a book even though I don’t like it? Don’t want to finish it or the characters are jumbled up in my head I want to start a typology on them.? I think this would be too much for me. There are good books like The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s wives that you read in a day and then there are others you have to struggle and within no time you’re snoring through the pages or lost and you have to start again. I shelf the snoring books in the hope that someday I will be able to finish them. Sometimes I do finish them,... eventually and sometimes those books keep being picked and returned right where they were because another better choice is available. But I don’t lose hope.I don't give up on them. I always advise them not to either, “I will get back to you someday, old friend.”
